A road trip is the best way to understand Sri Lanka, because the island changes so quickly. In a single day you can leave the cultural heart of Kandy, climb into cool tea country, and arrive somewhere that feels like a different country altogether. Kandy anchors the start, with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the elephants at Pinnawala nearby. The drive to Nuwara Eliya winds past working tea estates and waterfalls, and further on, Ella delivers the views everyone comes for: the Nine Arches Bridge and the short climb up Little Adam's Peak. The coast brings a change of pace. An early-morning safari in Yala National Park offers a real chance of spotting leopards, before the road turns to the beaches of Bentota and the calm of the Madu River. It is a lot of ground to cover, which is exactly why a planned, private vehicle makes the trip.
